{"id":2851,"date":"2012-04-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-04-24T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/neu.innovationsgesellschaft.ch\/fda-issues-guidances-on-assessments-of-nano-risks\/"},"modified":"2016-06-09T08:16:55","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T06:16:55","slug":"fda-issues-guidances-on-assessments-of-nano-risks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/innovationsgesellschaft.ch\/en\/fda-issues-guidances-on-assessments-of-nano-risks\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA Issues Guidances on Assessments of Nano Risks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The food safety document, <a href=\"http:\/\/innovationsgesellschaft.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/20120424_FDA_NanoFoodsGuidance1.pdf\">\"Guidance for Industry Assessing the Effects of Significant Manufacturing Process Changes, Including Emerging Technologies, on the Safety and Regulatory Status of Food Ingredients and Food Contact Substances, Including Food Ingredients that are Color Additives\"<\/a>, describes factors manufacturers should consider when determining if nanotechnology may affect the nature and the regulatory status of a food, or when a substance, such as packaging, comes into contact with food.<\/p>\n<p>The draft guidance for the cosmetics industry, \"<a href=\"http:\/\/innovationsgesellschaft.ch\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/Nano_Cosmetics_Guidance_to_OMB_3_7_12_OCAC_4_16_12.pdf\">Guidance for Industry Safety of Nanomaterials in Cosmetic Products\"<\/a> outlines FDA\u2019s current thinking on the safety of nanomaterials in cosmetics, cautioning that standard safety tests may need to be modified, or new tests may need to be developed. According to the draft, \u201cFDA expects that the science surrounding nanomaterials will continue to evolve and be used in the development of new testing methods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manufacturers are also encouraged to meet with FDA personnel to discuss testing methods and data necessary to substantiate a product\u2019s safety. Public comment on the drafts is invited, although the official publication of the drafts has not yet been scheduled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuidance for Industry: Safety of Nanomaterials in Cosmetic Products\u201d describes issues that manufacturers should consider to ensure that cosmetic products made with nanomaterials are safe. Nanomaterials may be\u00a0 used in lotions and moisturizing creams for a smoother feel. They may also be used in makeup to create a more natural look.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, we don\u2019t have any information to make us believe that use of nanotechnology in cosmetics would cause a safety issue,\u201d says Linda Katz, M.D., director of FDA\u2019s Office of Cosmetics and Colors.\u00a0 \u201cWe will continue to monitor cosmetic products, and if safety issues arise, we will follow up to make sure that the products are safe for consumer use.\u201d Cosmetics do not require FDA approval before being sold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuidance for Industry: Assessing the Effects of Significant Manufacturing Process Changes\u201d describes factors industry should consider when determining whether a significant change in the manufacturing of a food substance affects its identity, safety or regulatory status (such as whether a substance is covered by an existing food additive regulation).
