Lively activity concerning nano regulation in the EU

Various activities concerning the regulation of nanomaterials in the European Union have been reported within the last few days. Of particular interest are the activities of the European Commission regarding transparency measures for nanomaterials on the market.

The European Commission has published the first chapters of a draft of an impact assessment on transparency measures for nanomaterials. At the same time, it announced the public consultation of said document. The aim of the impact assessment is to identify and develop measures to increase transparency and to provide a regulatory overview on nanomaterials. The Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) responded by announcing the publication of a draft response and by inviting its members to submit contributions. The public consultation will last until August. Before that, a validation workshop will be held.

At the same time, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission has published a report, recapitulating issues relevant for the on-going discussion on transparency and requests for more information regarding the use of nanomaterials in consumer products.

In France, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) calls for a stronger regulation of nanomaterials (see press release and report). Back in April, it released its views on the adaptation of REACH with regard to nanomaterials.
