Book of recommendations for the European Commission
In the course of the NANOFORCE project three nanomaterials of great interest are tested and recommendations for the European Commission – with regard to the revision of REACH – are derived. The recommendations concern, among other subjects, toxicology testing and the adaptation of safety data sheets (SDS) for products containing nanomaterials.
The researchers recommend using a product-based rather than a particle-based approach when conducting toxicology studies. Following the sections of an SDS they suggest reporting the actual uses of a product rather than all possible uses. With regard to ecotoxicology testing, they endorse including various trophic levels, lethal and sublethal effects as well as the behaviour in different environmental compartments in studies. The researches stress the need of a clear distinction between different dispersion protocols and media. Concerning future nano-safety research in general, they encourage the standardisation of methods, conducting long-term studies and the study of possible interactions between different types of nanomaterials.
In the „Book of recommendations“ NANOFORCE also addresses four topics frequently discussed among stakeholders (with regard to the revision of REACH): uniform definition, case by case approach, standardised methods and life cycle assessment of nanomaterials.
The recommendations were published as an exerpt (Book of recommendations for the European Commission - Excerpt) and as a longversion (Book of recommendations for the European Commission - Longversion).
