New Database Shows Nanotechnology in Food Products
Against the background of the increasing spread of food products containing nanomaterials, the Center for Food Safety (CFS) built a new information platform for consumers.
On October 5th, the Center for Food Safety (CFS) published their new nanotechnology database showing the spread of nanomaterials within the food sector. The database shows different types of nanomaterials used in specific products. Their country of origin as well as companies selling or producing the products are listed. Titanium dioxide, silver, silicon dioxide and nanoencapsulation account for the majority of the entries. The major country of origin is the United States. Most products listed were either found to contain nano or claiming to contain nano, either as food supplements/additives or in packaging and other contact devices.
According to CFS, the database is necessary because of inadequate regulation and information in the area of potential risks of nanomaterials for environmental and human health. The nanotechnology platform aims at increasing transparency within the food market and showing the spread of nanomaterials in this sector.
