Public consultation on the EC nanotech research code of conduct (CoC)

The European Commission has opened a public consultation in order to receive input from all people and organisations involved or interested in nanosciences and nanotechnologies research in Europe, and notably researchers, policy makers, industry, media and civil society organisations.

On 7 February 2008, the European Commission adopted a recommendation for a Code of Conduct for Responsible Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies Research. This was followed on 26 September 2008 by Council Conclusions on Responsible Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies. Both documents suggested that the Commission recommendation and the Code of Conduct should be revised after two years. This is currently planned for February 2010. The results of this consultation will contribute to that.
The aim of the Code of Conduct is to provide stakeholders with recognition for a responsible approach towards nanotechnology research. The Code of Conduct aims to frame future research development within a set of general principles on which Member States are invited to take concrete action to ensure that nanotechnologies are developed in a safe manner.
The online consultation is open until 3 January 2010.Code of Conduct on Reponsible N&N ResearchSource: European Commission Joint Research Centre
