Recommendations for nanomaterials under REACH

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has published generic and specific recommendations for the exposure assessment and risk characterisation of nanomaterials under REACH.

The best practice document is based on the outcome of the third and final GAARN (Group Assessing Already Registered Nanomaterials) meeting, which was held on 30th September 2013. The purpose of the GAARN meeting was to discuss best practice for assessing and managing the safety of nanomaterials under the REACH Regulation. Furthermore, the objective was to increase confidence and mutual understanding among stakeholders to ensure the sustainable development and usage of nanomaterials.

In light of the recommendations, ECHA concludes that REACH registration dossiers need to be updated with new nano-specific studies as scientific developments are progressing. Safe use claims under REACH should be based on explicit and transparent documentation supporting the hazard, exposure and risk assessment of nanomaterials.
