Old tires converted to new outdoor pants

Polyamides based on chemically recycled tires form the basis for new, robust outdoor pants.

A recycled pant based on old tires: The new product line from the outdoor sports company VAUDE, which will be on sale from March 2022, is not only characterized by a timeless design, robust material and easy reparability, the pants are also sustainable, as chemically recycled used tires are used as a raw material. BASF and VAUDE thus want to make a contribution to reducing waste and conserving valuable resources.

"Our Ultramid® Ccycled™ is an innovative polyamide 6 that can be used to produce high-quality textiles. During production, we save fossil raw materials and also offer our customers a reduced carbon footprint," said Christoph Gahn, Vice President Business Management Polyamides at BASF. René Bethmann, Innovation Manager at VAUDE, adds, "We want to be pioneers when it comes to establishing a circular economy for our functional clothing. Our goal is to make a measurable contribution to the environment. Reducing the need for primary fossil resources clearly pays towards this goal, as do reduced CO2 emissions for our products. By using Ultramid® CcycledTM we can reduce the CO2 footprint by more than half *."

BASF feeds pyrolysis oil from used tires into its production Verbund in Ludwigshafen, partially replacing fossil resources. The proportion of recycled raw material is allocated to specific products manufactured in the Verbund using a certified mass balance approach. The products bearing the name suffix "CcycledTM" have exactly the same properties as those made from fossil raw materials. Customers can therefore process them in the same way and use them in their conventional processes. Ultramid® CcycledTM can therefore also be used in applications with high quality and performance requirements, such as in the textile industry.
